Gerardus signed up for military service with the KNIL and left for the Dutch East Indies. On 8 December 1941, one day after the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Dutch government declared war on Japan from London. Gerardus is called to arms and deployed as a brigadier of the infantry in the defense of the colony. On 8 March 1942, the KNIL in Bandoeng is forced to capitulate. Around this time, Gerardus and thousands of other Dutch soldiers were taken prisoner and taken to the camps. He eventually ends up in Samarinda on the east coast of Borneo. In the Japanese camps, the prisoners of war are subjected to the most varied hardships and systematic ill-treatment. They are forced to do hard, exhausting work for the Japanese military operations, but hardly receive adequate food, medicine and clothing. Housing in the camps is appallingly poor, allowing infectious and tropical diseases to spread quickly. In their weakened state, the prisoners are not only at great risk of serious accidents, but they are also beaten by the guards if they feel that the work is not progressing fast enough. Thousands of soldiers die in the camps under these conditions. The hardships eventually become too much for Gerardus as well. He succumbs to the effects of exhaustion, illness and malnutrition in Samarinda. Gerardus finds his final resting place on the Dutch cemetery Ancol in Jakarta.

Gerardus was killed at Samarinda II or in the Mahakam river basin, Borneo - as written on the Oorlogsgravenstichting at The National Archives. Since it was not possible to identify each victim separately, the indication "executed" sufficed, with a mass cross on stating the names of the victims.
